Energy Saving Grant For Minority, Women, & Veteran Owned Businesses


The private sector is stepping up in new ways to support American businesses that the public sector has not to date.
Independence LED (www.IndependenceLED.com), a Pennsylvania manufacturer of energy saving LED tube lights and multi tube light fixtures, has launched an Energy Saving Grant program specifically for Minority, Women, and Veteran business enterprises. The program is set for Pennsylvania first, since it is the home state of the company.
Based on the traction and availability of additional funds beyond the $5 Million allocated for Pennsylvania, Independence LED may consider rolling out the program in 2013 to other states across the country. Industry insiders expect that the states beyond Pennsylvania would include other northeast corridor states and possibly California given the higher cost per kWh than the U.S. average.
Independence LED’s Chairman said, “Our success in the LED tube light industry has triggered the initiation of this Grant Program for Minority, Women, and Veteran owned business across our home state of Pennsylvania. When we learned about the disproportionally high unemployment levels among Veterans and Minorities, we were even more motivated to support our fellow business owners in Pennsylvania and reward their entrepreneurial spirit. Since lighting typically accounts for about a third of commercial electricity consumption, and our LEDs reduce the cost by 50%, every dollar saved can go towards either retaining or hiring key employees.” When questioned about the roll out to other states, Mr. Szoradi responded, “We are open to expanding the program in 2013 to other states especially those with political leadership that has set target benchmarks for energy efficiency. Governors from both parties can inspire change to reduce energy waste, and we added Veteran owned business to our Grant program in to support all of those that have served our country.”

LED replacement for strip lights


Cornwall-based OMC has announced a range of multi-angle LED light tubes which can be used to replace traditional light sources.
The 24V fixtures consume 2.9W per 30cm of tube and are dimmable using the firm's range of controllers.
Mounting is by screws to the installation surface using the range of multi-angle brackets provided.

"The adjustable mounting brackets allow the light to be directed to where it is needed," said the firm.

Factory to produce innovative composite materials opens in Yakutia


The factory of innovative composite materials based on continuous basalt fiber opened in Pokrovsk, the administrative center of the Khangalassky district of ??Yakutia. In accordance with "Basalt - New Technologies" project, the factory will produce four types of products using nanotechnologies.

    Metal stamping is the process of cutting and shaping metal alloys into specific forms, especially to be used as components for large machinery or structures.     Fossils of European Stegosaurs are very rare. What fossil material that has been excavated provides evidence of a number of Stegosaur genera from the Jurassic, but most of the specimens are incomplete and highly fragmented. Little is known about the evolution of the Thyreophora (armoured dinosaurs) in Europe. However, over the last few years a number of better preserved and more complete Stegosaur fossils have been discovered in western Portugal. One of these recent fossil discoveries, that of a dinosaur that came to be known as Miragaia has inspired Collecta to make a replica of this armoured dinosaur.
    Little is Known about European Stegosaurs
    In contrast to most other European Stegosaur remains, much of the front part of the skeleton of this Late Jurassic Stegosaur is known. Paleontologists have excavated at least two specimens, one adult, one sub-adult from the same dig site in Upper Jurassic strata attributed to the Lourinha Formation of western Portugal. Elements of the skull have been discovered and from this scientists have been able to reconstruct this dinosaur. Collecta, the dinosaur model makers, have used the scientific data to produce a colourful, not-to-scale dinosaur model of this Portuguese herbivore.
    The First Stegosaur Skull Discovered in Europe
    Skull material includes the premaxilla, maxilla and the naris post elements that comprise the back of the skull. Post cranial material comprises of shoulder bones, most of the front legs, neck bones and a number of armoured plates. Miragaia seems to have had a remarkably long neck for a Stegosaur. It had an estimated fifteen cervical vertebrae (neck bones), more than long-necked Sauropods such as Diplodocus and Apatosaurus.
    The Miragaia Dinosaur Model
    The Miragaia model from Collecta shows this long neck in fine detail. In fact the head and the neck make up about twenty-five percent of the length of the entire model. Scientists have debated how flexible the neck of Miragaia was, ironically the plastic compound used to make this replica has left the model with a rather bendy neck, but this does not detract from the overall quality of the model.
    The head is narrow and the front legs are smaller than the hind legs, a trait seen in most other Stegosaur genera. The model has been painted light brown, with a red flash on the throat pouch. The armour plating and the tail spikes are painted in a dark green colour, mimicking the colouration of the top of the spine and down to the tail. The model has two shoulder spikes, these are large, more than two centimetres in length and painted bright red.
    Armour Embedded into the Skin
    The Miragaia dinosaur model has been given a rough skin texture, to give the impression that this dinosaur had large scales, with some dermal armour embedded along the flanks. Scientists are not sure what the tail of this dinosaur was like. There have been no fossils of the back-end of Miragaia found. The model makers at Collecta have given their replica a row of spines running back from over the hips to the tip of the tail.
    The model's overall length is nineteen centimetres approximately,and it is a welcome addition to the Collecta model range, one that will no doubt delight fans of Stegosaurs.

    Jesse Csincsak on The Bachelorette Casting Process

    On April 18, two Nashville residents filed a class action lawsuit against ABC and producer Mike Fleiss, alleging purposeful discrimination against minorities when casting leads for popular reality shows The Bachelor and The Bachelorette. In a statement, ABC calls the suit “baseless.” Speaking exclusively with Wetpaint Entertainment, Bachelorette alum Jesse Csincsak sheds light on what he saw from inside the ABC casting machine — and candidly explains why he agrees with the plaintiffs.
    Jesse, who got engaged to DeAnna Pappas on Season 4 of The Bachelorette, flew out to Los Angeles on ABC’s dime, he says, to be interviewed by a third party casting agency. “The way it works,” Jesse says, “is ABC outsources all casting to a third party agency who calls you in and basically showcases you in front of a room of people.” Most guys are asked to take their shirts off during the final casting call, Jesse explains.
    Jesse’s theory is that show execs cast for a variety of roles each season, depending on the personality of the lead Bachelor or Bachelorette. “They have a cast of roles that they fill, they want the good guy, the preacher’s son, the guy you want to punch in the face,” Jesse explains, adding he was the latter. His ex-fiancee, DeAnna Pappas, has also alluded to producers’ influence over the story arc, admitting in a previous interview that she felt she “let producers guide [her] heart.”
    Jesse, for his part, says he continues to be negatively affected by how he was portrayed on The Bachelorette. “What they don’t tell you is, three years from now, you’re not going to be able to get a job, and your parents will get handwritten hate mail.” While he agrees with the plaintiffs of the suit’s allegations of discrimination, Jesse urges potential contestants to think about the reverberating effects of appearing on reality television. “This will affect your life for years to come. They turn your relationship into a business. The whole thing is sort of discriminating.”

    How to Build Your Own LED Light Panel

    An LED (Light Emitting Diode) light panel is a square (although it can be other shapes), flat panel that has LED lights covering one side. LED lights are durable, produce little heat and consume a small amount of electricity. LEDs also come in a variety of colors. LED panels may have many different colors to create an interesting effect. Constructing an LED light panel is quite simple, as most of the components can be purchased already assembled.
    1 Determine the size of your LED light panel. A 1 foot-by-1 foot light panel should produce plenty of light. Locate or construct a wooden panel of that size. The wood panel should ideally be 1/2-inch thick and should not be more than 1 inch thick.
    2 Paint the wooden panel. This step is optional, as the front of the LED light panel will be covered in LED light strips. Wait for the paint to dry.
    3 Purchase LED light strips. LED light strips are a number of LED lights all grouped together in a strip. Purchase strips that are roughly the length of the wooden panel. A strip will ideally run from one end of the panel to the other. Purchase enough strips to cover the entire panel. If the strips are too long, they can be cut to suit the length of the panel; this will not impact the functioning of the remaining strips as long as the power cord (to the control unit) is in tact. An alternative is to purchase the strips first and then fashion the panel to fit the strips.
    4 Apply super glue to the back of the LED light strips and lay them in rows along the wooden board. Once they are all laid out they should cover the board completely. Ensure that the wires coming from the end of each LED strip are all on the same side.
    5 Connect the wires from the LED light strips to the LED control unit. The LED light strip wires should pop right into the control unit. The LED control unit is a hub for all the LED light strips' wires. It manages all the connections of the LED power wires and has a number of ports for them. The control unit will either run on batteries or be plugged into an outlet. It does not come with the strips but can be purchased at any store that sells LED light strips.
    6 Super glue the control unit to the back of the LED light panel or mount it separately. Plug in or insert batteries into the LED control unit (depending on the model). Turn it on and test out the LED panel light.

    How to Use a 555 Timer As a Voltage-to-Frequency Converter

    The 555 timer integrated circuit (IC) is a versatile oscillator and general-purpose pulse source. Its dedicated control voltage input lets you use the 555 as a voltage-to-frequency converter. In this application, you configure the 555 as an oscillator (astable mode) and vary a voltage at the control input. This will change the frequency by +/- 25 percent around a center frequency ranging from minutes per cycle to 500 kilohertz. The 555 has good linearity of frequency control in this range.

    Examine the 555's data sheet. In particular, look for application circuits that use the 555 as a free-running oscillator.

    Determine the starting or nominal frequency at which you want the 555 to run. This is the frequency the 555 will produce with no control voltage. Frequency is determined by a timing network of two resistors and a capacitor.
    You can calculate the frequency by the following formula:

    Where f is the frequency converter in cycles per second, Ra and Rb are the ohm values of the two resistors in the timing network, and C is the timing capacitor value in farads.

    Build a 555-based oscillator on the breadboard using the timing network calculated in step 2 and powered by the 10-volt DC supply. Use the application notes as a guide for connecting external parts and power to the 555. Connect a frequency counter's signal ground to the 555's power supply ground and the counter's signal input to the 555's output at pin 3. With the 555 circuit powered on, the counter should display a steady frequency.

    Connect the variable DC supply's ground to the 10V supply ground. Set the variable supply to 5 volts and connect it to pin 5 of the 555. On the frequency counter, observe the effect varying the voltage between 5 and 9 volts has on the 555's frequency.

    How Much Would You Pay for a Light Bulb?

    On Tuesday, I stopped at a local hardware store to buy a new light bulb for our outdoor motion lights above our garage doors. The fixture has two bulbs, but only one has been lit. I figure I’m saving energy if we don’t have to keep both lighted.
    I picked out a General Electric LED flood lights with a spiral interior that uses 26 watts and cost about $7. It’s guaranteed to last six years. It has an Energy Star rating and supposedly will save $64 over its lifetime compared to using four 90-watt Halogen bulbs.
    OK, but it contains mercury, and the package listed a website for details about proper disposal. Besides, it doesn’t give off much light, though it supposedly turns brighter after a brief warm-up. Typically, the floodlight is only on a short time. I might have to buy a second bulb for the other socket. I’d still be further ahead, however, than paying the energy costs for two traditional bulbs.
    Later Tuesday I read an Associated Press story about a new “amazing” light bulb. It will go on sale Sunday, Earth Day, at Home Depot and other outlets. The bulb won a $10 million government contest.
    The cost of components, including chips,LED panel light or diodes, that give off the light makes it pricey. Commercial customers will pay $60, but the maker, Philips, will discount it to $50 for consumers. Philips also is working on deals with utilities to discount it further, by as much as $20 or $30, the story said.
    This LED bulb uses just 10 watts, meaning it saves about $8 per year in electricity if it’s used four hours per day, the story said. It’s expected to last 20 years—or 30 times longer than an incandescent.

    Install a HID Kit in Halo Projector Headlights

    An HID kit, or high intensity discharge kit,HID xenon kit, can vastly improve the function of your vehicle's aftermarket halo headlights.     How to Fix a Leaking Ball Valve

    A misaligned or old toilet ball valve, also known as a tank ball, may be the culprit in a toilet that constantly runs. This ball-shaped seal is what keeps water from running into the toilet when it is lowered and allows water to flow for flushing when opened. There is more than one cause for a leaky tank ball, and it is best to check thoroughly before buying replacement parts.

    Remove lid from the toilet tank. Examine the tank ball and determine if it is seating correctly. Examine the wire that is attached to the guide arm on the overflow pipe.

    Turn water off using the valve behind the toilet. Then, straighten the wire if it is bent and adjust the placement on the guide arm if necessary. The wire should be placed on the guide arm where it is lifted high enough to open the valve during a flush and lowered low enough to seal when finished.

    Turn water off at the valve behind the toilet. Remove old ball valve assembly from the guide arm on the overflow pipe.

    Slide the lower lift wire through the upper lift wire and its guide. Attach the upper lift wire to the guide arm.

    Thread the tank ball onto the lower lift wire. It should be snug, but not over-tightened.

    Align the ball over the drain seat, making sure the wire is vertical. Use the flush lever a couple of times to be sure everything fits properly.

    Turn the water back on. Check for leaks, and make any necessary adjustments. If none are needed, the toilet is ready for use.

J429 is the SAE American standard specification for bolts and other externally threaded fasteners such as studs, screws and sems. The J429 bolt specification identifies bolts by a system of head markings. You can reference the bolt head markings for material, mechanical and strength specifications from charts found online or in SAE and Industrial Fasteners Institute handbooks.
    Grade 1 & Grade 2 Hex Bolts
    SAE J429 Grade 1 and Grade 2 bolt specifications cover 1/4- to 1 1/2-inch body diameter, low to medium carbon steel bolts. Their mechanical and strength properties, measured in pounds per square inch, and are found in the fastener mechanical properties for steel charts which can be viewed online or from the SAE handbook. Grade 1 and Grade 2 bolts have no head marking. They are equivalent in strength and mechanical properties to the American Society of Testing Materials A307 specification for Grades A & B bolts. Grade 1 and 2 bolts have the least strength and heat resistance properties of all the bolts within the SAE J429 specification.
    Grade 5 Hex Bolts
    SAE J429 Grade 5 bolt specifications cover bolts with 1/4- to 1 1/2-inch body diameter and made from medium carbon steel, quenched and tempered. Quenching and tempering are processes related to the heat treating of bolts for specific ductility and hardness values. Grade 5 bolts are stronger and have more heat tolerance than Grade 1 and 2 bolts. Proof load, tensile and yield strength values are found on the fastener mechanical properties for steel charts. Grade 5 bolts are marked by three equidistant lines beginning at the outer rim of the bolt's head to its center. Used for medium to heavy duty fastenings, Grade 5 bolts are equivalent to ASTM A449 bolts up to 1 1/2 inch body diameter.
    Grade 5.2 Hex Bolts
    SAE J429 Grade 5.2 bolts are marked by three equidistant lines beginning on the outer rim of the bolt head and meeting at its halfway point. Body diameter specifications are 1/4 to 1 inch. Grade 5.2 bolts are made from low carbon martensitic steel, quenched and tempered. When the AC input flows in the positive direction, the diode attached to the positive wire allows electricity to flow through, while the diode attached to the negative wire closes off. When the AC input flows in the negative direction, the diode attached to the negative output allows electricity to flow through, while the positive diode closes off. All the negative current is shunted down the negative wire, and all the positive current is shunted down the positive one.

    An HID kit, or high intensity discharge kit, can vastly improve the function of your vehicle's aftermarket halo headlights. Halo headlights have a "ring" of light around the main light. This type of projector headlight focuses a beam of light onto the road so that you can see while driving at night. HID kits are available from most auto parts stores and aftermarket specialty shops (sometimes referred to as "speed shops"). Additional criteria for inclusion were; age between 45 and 70 year; insulin therapy stable for at least 2 years; negative markers for hepatitis A, B and C; alcohol abstinence for at least 2 years; liver cirrhosis determined on biopsy no earlier than 4 years previously; and class 2 according to the Child classification of cirrhosis. Ranges of measurements were conducted to assess metabolic control, serum lipid levels and liver function throughout the treatment period.

    Silymarin and Liver Disease

    Silymarin provided protection against the toxic effects of long-term treatment with psychotropic drugs (used in mental illness) in a randomized, double-blind, placebo controlled clinical study of 60 people. Before the study began, all of the participants had been taking the psychotropic drugs phenothiazine or butyrophenone, or both, for at least 5 years. Subjects were divided into four groups for the 3-month trial: group I took psychotropic drugs and a high dose of silymarin (800 mg per day), group 11 took psychotropics with placebo, group III took silymarin only (800 mg per day), and group IV took placebo. Silymarin provided liver protection to group I by reducing blood levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), an indicator of liver damage that increases during long-term treatment with psychotropics. Patients in group II continued to experience rising levels of MDA, whereas those who took placebo had declining MDA levels until the psychotropics were reinstated.     LED driver compatible with triac dimming

    Fairchild Semiconductor has developed the FL7730 single-stage primary side regulation (PSR) controller with power factor correction (PFC), TRIAC and analog dimming compatibility, as well as the FL7732 for non-dimming applications.
    The FL7730 is an active PFC controller for single-stage flyback topology application. The device supports both TRIAC and analog dimming. Implemented with Fairchild's unique analog sensing technology, the device can achieve TRIAC dimming control without flicker over the full range of 0 to 100% light output.
    The FL7730 and FL7732 combine primary-side regulation and a single-stage PFC topology to minimize total bill-of-material (BOM) count, such as an input electrolytic capacitor and feedback circuitry.
    To improve power factor and THD, both devices feature constant on-time control with an internal error amplifier and low bandwidth compensator. Precise Constant Current accuracy/control (± 5 percent) regulates accurate output current, independent of input and output voltage, allowing designers to achieve high and improved lighting quality. Operating frequency is proportionally adjusted by output voltage in both devices to guarantee DCM operation with optimized PF/THD and simpler design.
    PF (=0.9), low total harmonic distortion (THD) (Class C) and power efficiency of up to 85 percent for the FL7730 - greater than 85 percent for the FL7732 in non-dimming applications - allows these devices to meet worldwide energy saving regulations.
